Scaling up from a pilot project to a test facility

How do you move climate-friendly fuel technology from pilot scale to industrial validation? For Kvasir Technologies, the answer was a fully automated test facility developed in close collaboration with Init.

Kvasir Technologies develops bio-oil from residual biomass as a climate-friendly alternative to fossil fuels. After several years in the development phase, the company was ready to take the next step by scaling up the technology from a pilot plant to an advanced test facility capable of producing up to four tonnes of oil per day.

To bring the project to fruition, Kvasir needed a partner with extensive expertise in automation, software and systems integration. Hence Init’s involvement in the development of the facility.

Industrial facility

In principle, we can produce bio-oil in volumes equivalent to global marine fuel consumption. That’s what makes the technology so interesting.

Challenge

Advanced, industrial-scale test facility

Kvasir Technologies was faced with a complex task. The new test facility had to support an advanced process in which residual biomass is converted into bio-oil under high pressure and at temperatures of around 350°C.

At the same time, the facility had to be fully automated, ensure stable operation and provide a robust foundation for data collection, process control and documentation. With no in-house expertise in industrial automation and integration, Kvasir turned to Init as its technical partner.

Solution

Fully automated, integrated test facility

Init was involved throughout the project, from consultancy and design to implementation and commissioning of the completed facility.

The scope of supply included electrical documentation, main switchboards and control panels, IT racks, servers, PLC hardware, network infrastructure, Wi-Fi, and fire detection and camera systems.

On the software side, Init developed PLC and SCADA solutions based on the Rockwell PlantPAx platform, as well as network and security solutions featuring Fortinet firewalls.

All process units are integrated into a single control and monitoring system, giving Kvasir a complete overview of the production process and the associated data.

Development of the facility required close collaboration between Kvasir’s specialists and Init’s experts, as both the technology and the processes were developed and optimised throughout the project.

Kvasir investors see great potential

We have greatly appreciated the close collaboration with Init’s experts – and having Init Fredericia right next door to us has been a real advantage. It has enabled them to provide support on site at short notice whenever required.

Ready for industrial validation and full-scale production

The platform provides centralised control, monitoring and data exchange across the advanced production environment, creating a robust foundation for efficient and stable operations – as well as for data collection and documentation.

The test facility is thus ready to scale up to producing sufficient volumes of bio-oil for industrial validation of the product – for example through practical testing on an operating vessel. This is the final and critical step towards securing the first major purchase and investment agreements. In addition, Kvasir is planning to establish a full-scale production facility in Aabenraa with an annual capacity of 40,000 tonnes.

About Kvasir Technologies

Kvasir Technologies utilises an efficient proprietary technology replicating the natural process of turning biomass into oil. A process that takes nature millions of years, Kvasir does it in minutes.

The company has invented a novel technology for conversion of plant biomass into a 1:1 substitute for fossil marine fuel in the short term, and long term to replace fossil derived high value fuels and chemicals.
