More refining capacity at Eramet Sauda

Init helped Eramet Sauda increase capacity at its refining plant with new control, regulation and monitoring that enable a higher oxygen supply and a greater yield from the refining process.

Sauda lies in the north-east of Rogaland and has around 5,000 inhabitants. As of 2016, with its two 40 MW furnaces and refining plant, Eramet Norway’s smelter in Sauda was the largest ferromanganese plant in Northern Europe.

In 2017, Eramet Sauda engaged Init Kristiansand (then Necto) for a delivery in connection with a capacity increase at the refining plant.

ASPIRATION

Greater yield from the refining process

The refining process depends on a steady supply of oxygen, delivered by Praxair (now Linde). Ice build-up on Praxair’s evaporators limits their oxygen capacity. To get more out of its refining plant, Eramet Sauda needed a reliable way to supply more water to de-ice the evaporators, controlled and monitored through the plant’s existing control system.

SOLUTION

More water, more oxygen

Init Kristiansand programmed new control, regulation and monitoring for an increased supply of water to Praxair. The water is used to de-ice Praxair’s evaporators, increasing their oxygen capacity.

The solution was integrated into the plant’s process control system, based on System 800xA 5.1 with 12 clients and eleven AC800M controllers. The project was carried out in close collaboration with Sauda Installasjon and the operations personnel at Eramet Sauda.

RESULT

More oxygen, a stronger refining process

With an increased and well-controlled water supply, Praxair can deliver more oxygen to the refining plant, and Eramet Sauda achieves a greater yield from the refining process.

The new functionality was built into the plant’s existing System 800xA environment.
