Innovation through

User Experience.

Lowering risk, raising efficiency and improving operations, by focusing on People First. It’s no secret that the people who run your facility are a major factor in how well operations are going, so of course the designed solution should empower them to do their best jobs.

Solutions that

empower people.

At Init, we design HMIs and industrial software that empower people – reducing human error, increasing efficiency, and improving the overall user experience (UX). There is no one‑size‑fits‑all HMI or user interface (UI), because every facility, every process, and every operator is different.

Our Way is People First.

That means our design process is always tailored to the humans who will use the system – and grounded in User‑Centered Design, Human Factors Engineering (HFE), Design Thinking, ISA101, IEC63303, and best practices from modern UX/UI and HCI (Human‑Computer Interaction). Across industries, the principle remains the same: Understand real user needs and design iteratively with the people who operate the system. Our iterative process is adjustable to fit your project and users, but it follows four general phases with the user always being the driving force.

Stages

Understand and define

user needs.

Great interaction design begins with understanding people. Before any sketches or wireframes, we explore the daily tasks, challenges, and decision‑making operators face. Through interviews, observations, and personas, we clarify user needs, behavioural patterns, and the context of use.

This phase includes both needs clarification – understanding how users work and where challenges arise – and needs specification, where we translate insights into clear, actionable requirements.

This is the foundation for strong usability, reliable human‑machine interaction, and safer operations. Whether you call it UX, human factors engineering, or simply understanding the end user, this phase ensures we design for real people – not assumptions.

Explore solutions

that meet the needs.

Jumping straight into development can be an expensive mistake. Instead, we rapidly explore ideas through quick sketches, wireframes, and “quick‑and‑dirty” prototyping. Paper mockups, simple digital prototypes, and early HMI philosophy discussions make it easy to fail fast — before it becomes costly.

By involving operators early, we validate concepts, uncover hidden challenges, and ensure that the solution truly meets the defined user needs and aligns with User Experience (UX) best practices.

Design the solution

following best practice.

Once the right direction is clear, we transform prototypes into high‑fidelity UI designs. Whether we create a custom visual identity or apply a proven Init style, we design consistently and in line with ISA101, IEC63303, UX/UI standards, Human‑Centered Design, and our design system principles.

This is where sketches become structured wireframes, and wireframes become a polished, intuitive user interface ready for implementation.

Build the solution

consistently.

A great design must also be implemented consistently. We translate the final UI into clear guidelines — style guides, design systems, component libraries, and documentation of design decisions.

These artefacts help developers build coherent HMIs and maintain them over time. Grounded in ISA101, IEC63303, and modern UX principles, they ensure your solution remains scalable, maintainable, and user‑friendly far into the future.
