A secure control system today, ready for a digital tomorrow

Init helped SAREN Energy BIO-EL migrate its waste-to-energy plant to the latest and most secure control system version, with an improved HMI and a strong foundation for future digitalisation.

SAREN Energy BIO-EL (SEB) is a modern, fuel-flexible waste incineration plant with high environmental standards, located at Øra in Fredrikstad. The plant receives and treats waste, and its energy recovery supplies district heating to homes and steam to industry in Fredrikstad, as well as electricity to the public grid.

As critical infrastructure for the city, the plant depends on a control system that is both reliable and secure. With the existing system outdated, SEB engaged Init Kristiansand (then Necto) to carry out a migration.

ASPIRATION

A robust, secure foundation for future digitalisation

SEB wanted to move from an outdated control system to the latest and most secure version, give its operators a better working environment, and lay the groundwork for further digitalisation, all with cyber security in focus and without disrupting the delivery of heat, steam and power.

SOLUTION

From an outdated control system to the latest and most secure version

Init Kristiansand upgraded the plant’s control system to the latest version of System 800xA, with an improved HMI for the operators. The migration also lays the foundation for future digitalisation, with cyber security as a central design principle.

The migration was carried out during a routine shutdown, with changes and challenges handled smoothly along the way. In collaboration with the process owner, Init Kristiansand also developed solutions that strengthen the robustness and data security of the plant.

RESULT

Robust operations, with cyber security in focus

SAREN Energy BIO-EL now operates on an up-to-date, secure control system, giving operators a clearer, more modern HMI and the plant a more robust defence against cyber threats.

Completed within a routine shutdown, the migration protected the plant’s energy deliveries to Fredrikstad, while giving SEB a solid platform for future digitalisation.
