Extensive SCADA integration for district heating based on renewable energy

Init is a trusted partner to Celsio, providing help and guidance on the development, enhancement and maintenance of Celsio’s extensive SCADA system for Oslo's district heating network.

Hafslund Oslo Celsio (Celsio) uses local excess heat, that would normally be lost, to produce new, renewable water-based district heating and cooling. For more than a decade, Init has been a trusted partner to Celsio. Above all, we provide help and guidance on the development, enhancement and maintenance of Celsio’s extensive SCADA system which controls Oslo’s district heating network.

This partnership represents Init’s steady commitment to improving critical infrastructure in close collaboration with Hafslund Oslo Celsio’s already strong team.

Aspiration

Managing growing demands and future-proofing the control system

Celsio needed to upgrade and optimise its control systems to effectively manage the increasing demands of Oslo’s district heating. The main challenge was to ensure the system’s current efficiency. At the same time, Celsio wanted to future-proof the SCADA system be preparing it for e.g.:

  • future technological shifts
  • environmental improvements
  • inclusion of energy recovery and incineration plants
  • continual expansion of heating plants and coverage

Furthermore, Celsio wanted to make sure that the control system would operate under the optimal mix of energy sources and, importantly, with minimal impact on the environment.

Solution

Comprehensive SCADA integration and development consultancy

Init has played a crucial role in this evolutionary process, supporting Celsio with e.g.:

  • System integration, design, development and implementation of the SCADA system
  • Control of heating plants with PLC programming and instrumentation
  • Required system upgrades and continuous support and service
  • Consultancy services, alongside installation and licensing support

Additionally, Init’s team helped with the development of databases, analytical reporting as well as cloud integration to improve production analysis. Likewise, we developed tools to achieve optimal production and operation.

Result

Enhanced reliability and future-ready SCADA system

Init’s contributions have significantly enhanced the functionality and reliability of Celsio’s SCADA systems. As a result, Celsio now has a SCADA system which effectively meets current operational requirements. In addition, the system is primed for future challenges.

Altogether, our collaboration has been instrumental in not just sustaining but advancing the capabilities of Oslo’s district heating system. The solution exemplifies effective and forward-thinking infrastructure management.

All in all, our partnership with Hafslund Oslo Celsio is proof of a successful technical collaboration in the realm of SCADA systems. At Init, we are proud of our journey from system integrator to being a key player in the system’s ongoing development.
